Overview

This project model an immersive virtual reality information retrieval system in the CAVE. In particular, it presents the user with a model of a physical library containing electronic theses and dissertations.

Interface

The state of no interaction is typically the user standing in the middle of the CAVE, facing forward, with the wand held parallel to the floor and side walls.

There are two modes of interaction: Movement (default) and Selection.

In Movement mode:

  1. Turning the wand from side to side causes the rotation in the respective direction. The speed of rotation depends on the angle of the wand.
  2. Tilting the front of the wand up or down causes translation forward or backwards respectively. The angle of the wand controls the speed of movement.
  3. Press button 3 to switch to Selection Mode.

In Selection Mode:

  1. The wand is used to control the movement of the pointer to point to books. When the wand is close enough to a book, it is highlighted and the title/author are displayed above the bookshelf.
  2. Press button 2 to display/hide the abstract for the selected book.
  3. Press button 3 to switch to Movement Mode.

Navigation

The user starts off in a foyer with many portals leading to various colleges. Walk into a portal to go to the corresponding collection of books. Each college has a floor. Each floor contains bookcases with books and a portal to get back to the foyer. To exit, walk into the portal marked "Exit".
